Without pain, we would not be able to survive.  It stops us continuing with what is damaging us and causing pain; standing too close to that hot fire, walking on a broken ankle and so on.  This is known as acute pain.  It is urgent, intense and localised. 

 

Chronic pain is different, it is relentless and can be debilitating.   There is a continuous relaying of messages between our brain and the site of our pain.  Our muscles brace and guard against future "attacks", causing the problem to persist and worsen.

Our perception of pain can be altered through hypnotherapy.  How we think about it can have a huge impact on what we feel.  Think about it, our pain is worse at night because there is nothing distracting our mind away from it.  Or think about an amputee; they can sometimes still feel pain in their foot despite it being removed.  These are examples of how the brain and thought processes have an impact on the pain we are feeling, and how we can think it so much worse than it actually is.

Solution focused hypnotherapy can help by reducing stress around our symptoms.  It can help us alter the perception of our pain, helping us visualise a preferred reaction to it.  Raising serotonin levels (our happy neurotransmitter) in our brain will assist in the interruption of messages sent from the site of our pain to the brain and back again.
